Ruaha

Ruaha

Ruaha is the largest park in Tanzania, and one of the least visited. Over 20,000 square kilometres, yet it receives a fraction of the visitors that reach the Serengeti or Ngorongoro . You can spend entire days without seeing another vehicle. It is predator country. Ruaha is renowned for large lion prides, healthy leopard and cheetah populations, and wild dog packs that roam the remote sectors . Seeing all three major cat species in one day is possible here — rare anywhere in Africa . It is a crossover of East and Southern African species. Ruaha marks the southernmost limit for lesser kudu, and the northern limit for species like sable and roan antelope — a wildlife mix found nowhere else in Tanzania . It is a birdwatcher's paradise. Over 570 species have been recorded, including raptors, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and seasonal migrants .

FAQ’s about Ruaha

Have more questions? Contact us.

Why visit Ruaha instead of the Serengeti?

Solitude and predator density. Ruaha receives a fraction of the visitors, and it is genuinely possible to watch a lion pride for twenty minutes without another vehicle in sight.

What wildlife can I see in Ruaha?

Large lion prides, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, elephants, buffalo, and a crossover of East and Southern African antelope species including greater kudu, sable, and roan.

What activities are unique to Ruaha?
Walking safaris, night drives, and fly camping. These are permitted in Ruaha and not always available in the Northern Circuit's major parks.
Is Ruaha suitable for first-time safari travellers?
It suits travellers who prioritise wilderness and solitude over the Great Migration. First-timers seeking the migration should do the Northern Circuit. Experienced safari travellers often find Ruaha richer.
