Jozani Forest Zanzibar

Jozani Forest

Jozani Forest is not a game park. There are no lions here. No elephants, no giraffes. What Jozani offers is something rarer the last surviving stand of mature indigenous forest on Zanzibar, and the only place on Earth where the Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives . The forest sits 35 kilometres southeast of Stone Town, on the road to Paje and Jambiani . It became Zanzibar's only national park in 2004, protecting a mosaic of groundwater forest, coral rag forest, and mangrove swamps that once covered the entire island . The main draw is the monkeys. The Zanzibar red colobus kima punju in Swahili, meaning "poison monkey" for its strong scent is found naturally nowhere else on the planet . Between 5,000 and 6,000 individuals remain, and Jozani protects the largest population . They are habituated to visitors, often feeding at eye level just metres from the trail . AfriMemories Expedition arranges private Jozani visits timed to the early morning, when the monkeys are active and the crowds haven't arrived.
