Tarangire National Park is the quiet gem of Tanzania's northern safari circuit. While the Serengeti draws the crowds and Ngorongoro fills the vehicles, Tarangire delivers one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles  with a fraction of the visitors.

The park is named after the Tarangire River, which flows through its centre and becomes the dry-season lifeline for thousands of animals. From July to October, as every other water source dries up for miles, elephant herds converge on the river in astonishing numbers. Over 3,000 elephants gather here  the densest population in Tanzania.

But elephants are only part of the story. Tarangire is a landscape of ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old. Its birdlife is extraordinary  over 550 species recorded, more than the famous Serengeti. Lions, leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs patrol the plains. Tree-climbing pythons haunt the riverine thickets.

Tarangire has earned TripAdvisor's Best of the Best Travelers' Choice Award for four consecutive years. It was named Africa's Leading Elephant Paradise National Park at the 2025 World Travel Awards.

AfriMemories Expedition arranges private Tarangire safaris  day trips from Arusha, or integrated into a full northern circuit itinerary.
